Upcoming deprecation of selected GitHub Copilot models in mid-October

GitHub will deprecate several models across all Copilot experiences, including Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes and code completions, on October 19, 2026. Affected are Gemini 3.7 Flash, GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4, GPT-5.4 mini, GPT-5 mini and Grok 4.5. Suggested replacements are Gemini 3.8 Flash, GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Luna and Grok 4.6. For Copilot Business and Enterprise the alternatives are enabled automatically unless admins have disabled default models; otherwise admins need to enable them in the model policies.

The switch moves teams to newer models such as GPT-5.6 Sol and Gemini 3.8 Flash, which should be an advantage in quality and speed for most. The challenge is pinned workflows: anyone who hardcoded model names in integrations or policies risks breakage on October 19. Admins in organizations with default models disabled should review their model policies now.
