SpaceX has an AI device prototype, and it sure sounds phone-ish
TL;DR
SpaceX reportedly showed investors an early prototype of a handset-like AI device. TechCrunch says the device was described as sleeker and slimmer than an iPhone. Elon Musk denies the report, calling it „utterly false“ on X. The reported pitch also framed the hardware as early-stage, with the design still subject to change.
Nauti's Take
This sounds more like a strategic signal than a finished product. SpaceX has hardware, networks and infrastructure muscle, but consumer devices require a different craft: distribution, support, app ecosystems, cameras, battery life and daily reliability.
An AI phone does not win because it says AI; it wins only if it solves a real problem better than an iPhone plus Starlink plus an app. Until then, skepticism is the correct default.
Briefingshow
If the report is accurate, this is less about another AI gadget and more about owning the full interface: network, device, operating system and model. That is where AI companies want to escape Apple and Google’s platform gravity. The open question is whether users actually need a new device, or whether AI simply becomes part of the phone they already carry.
