Internet Watch Foundation reports huge rise in AI child sexual abuse material

TL;DR

AI-generated child sexual abuse material is spreading online faster than ever, according to the Internet Watch Foundation. The UK-based monitor found more photorealistic abuse imagery in the first half of 2026 than in the whole of 2025. Its analysts assessed 6,310 AI images that met the legal definition of child sexual abuse, already 40% more than last year's total of just over 4,500. The IWF tracks this kind of material globally.

Nauti's Take

The IWF's detailed tracking is an advantage: reliable numbers give lawmakers and platforms the opportunity to act on AI-generated abuse material with precision. The risk, though, is growing faster than the defences, because photorealistic image generators drastically lower the barrier for offenders.

Image model providers and platforms need to expand safety filters, detection and reporting channels now.
