Apple might let you use ChatGPT from CarPlay
TL;DR
Apple is working to let CarPlay users access ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and other chatbots directly in the car – previously, users had to go through their iPhone. The Siri button and wake word remain unchanged; users must manually open chatbot apps but can then control them via voice. Developers will reportedly be able to configure apps to launch automatically when CarPlay starts.
Nauti's Take
This isn't a revolution, it's damage control. Apple knows Siri in the car is a joke – and that people pull out their iPhones to talk to ChatGPT while Siri sits silent.
Now that's officially allowed, but Apple keeps the reins: no wake-word replacement, no real integration. It feels like ,You can play, but only in our sandbox'.
The question is whether Google and OpenAI will play along – or focus on Android Auto, where they have more freedom.
Briefingshow
Siri has been the weak link in CarPlay for years – slow, often wrong, frustrating. If Apple is now opening the door to more capable LLMs, it's a rare admission that its own solution can't keep up. At the same time, Apple stays in control: the Siri button won't be replaced, and access requires manually opening apps.
A compromise between openness and ecosystem control.
