What will we get out of the AI boom? The data suggests lots of noisy, energy-hungry datacentres and not much else

TL;DR

Investment booms usually drive economic growth, but Australia's AI buildout looks different: mostly noisy, energy-hungry datacentres that create few jobs and little visible gain in living standards. Guardian columnist Greg Jericho argues the AI productivity boom is overhyped and questions the push for Australia to lead the AI race. The construction spending shows up in the national numbers, the payoff for households does not.

Nauti's Take

The opportunity is real: datacentre construction brings contracts, grid upgrades and infrastructure that local AI products can later run on. The catch is that concrete and electricity alone create no productivity gain as long as almost nobody uses the capacity commercially.

What matters is the follow-on use: regions that build applications and skills benefit, those betting on the construction boom alone carry the risk.
