AI-generated stories rated better quality than human-written ones, study finds

TL;DR

A study of 1,682 adults found that AI-generated short stories were sometimes rated higher than comparable human-written texts. Participants each read one of six stories, three written by humans and three by ChatGPT, with matching themes. According to the reported findings, the simpler language of the AI texts was easier to read and process. That says little about literary originality, but it shows how strongly readability shapes perceived quality.

Nauti's Take

For AI workflows, the study is mainly a testing prompt: shorter sentences and clearer structure may strongly influence perceived quality. Before turning that into a content rule, teams should test with their own audiences whether readability outweighs accuracy, originality, and brand voice.

The available report provides too little detail to treat the result as a broad verdict on human writing.
