AI Text Watermarking May Not Be Able to Meet the EU’s New Rules
TL;DR
The European Union now requires AI-generated text to be watermarked so that it can be identified as such. But tests on OpenAI’s new textGrain watermark, released in October and developed to comply with the new EU law, show that these watermarks often do not survive additional editing of the text or when it’s under 150 words.
Nauti's Take
If you plan to use textGrain in a content or support workflow, test short, edited outputs first and keep the results. Until the EU defines a measurable minimum for detection quality, a watermark alone cannot serve as reliable compliance evidence.
Small teams should keep a separate record of provenance, model, and editing steps so they can still explain how a text was produced when the signal is lost.
