OpenAI will delay GPT-5.6 after Trump administration request

TL;DR

OpenAI is not rolling out GPT-5.6 broadly at launch. Instead, the company is starting with a limited preview for a small group of trusted partners after a request from the Trump administration. The lineup includes Sol as the flagship model, plus Terra and Luna as cheaper tiers. For now, access is limited to partners whose participation has been shared with the government.

Nauti's Take

OpenAI appears to be getting a softer deal than Anthropic, but this is still not comfortable. If every major model has to pass through a political access corridor, AI release management turns into foreign policy, export control, and crisis PR at once.

Safety review makes sense. An improvised customer approval gate does not.

Briefingshow

This is more than a routine launch delay. The US government is placing itself between a frontier AI lab and its customers, turning model access into a security and policy decision. Without clear standards, that can become an opaque approval regime that affects competitors, developers, and international partners unevenly.
