Nvidia’s controversial DLSS 5 arrives September 3rd and requires serious GPU horsepower
TL;DR
Nvidia is officially launching DLSS 5 this week, following a divisive announcement in March where the AI upscaling tech was likened to a real-time generative AI filter for video games, or motion smoothing for games but worse. DLSS 5 will be available on RTX 50-series desktop and laptop GPUs and through GeForce Now cloud gaming, though the only game supporting it so far is NBA 2K27, launching September 3rd on PC. Nvidia has called DLSS 5 its most significant graphics breakthrough since real-time ray tracing in 2018.
Nauti's Take
Technically this is real progress, because generative interpolated frames can deliver frame rates on mid-range hardware that would otherwise demand expensive GPUs. The limit shows at launch: one supported game, steep hardware requirements, and an open question about how visible the artifacts get in fast-moving scenes.
RTX 50 owners can test it without pressure, everyone else is better off waiting for more titles and independent image comparisons.
