These ‘Masturbation Consultants’ Were Hired to Pleasure Themselves With AI

TL;DR

Joi AI hired ten people for a monthlong wellness study in which they were asked to masturbate using AI companions. The company suggests the practice could help address male loneliness. Wired describes an unusual field test at the intersection of sexuality, emotional chatbots and mental health, but offers no solid evidence of any therapeutic benefit. The open question is how such systems would measure effect, consent, data protection and potential dependency.

Nauti's Take

At least someone is measuring instead of asserting, and hard data on AI companions is almost nonexistent so far. The limits are obvious: ten participants, a vendor commissioning the work, and no independent criteria for any health benefit.

For teams building or deploying AI companions, the study is mainly a test of product responsibility: what conversational data gets stored, how consent is documented, and whether crisis signals are detected.
