Americans do not want AI data centers in their backyards
TL;DR
A new Gallup survey finds that over 70 percent of Americans oppose AI data center construction in their area, while just 7 percent strongly support it. Public hostility runs so deep that respondents would rather live near a nuclear power plant than a data center. Even at its peak, opposition to nuclear plants topped out at 63 percent. The findings come from two 2026 surveys covering more than 3,000 adults across all 50 US states.
Nauti's Take
There is a real opportunity here: operators who deliver efficiency, noise control and visible local benefit can win back political ground. The risk is the usual reflex — pushing more GPU halls through without engaging communities.
Hyperscalers that treat siting as policy work will benefit; projects banking on cheap land without buy-in should be cautious.
