China’s Alibaba takes another swipe at America’s AI supremacy

Alibaba released Qwen3.8-Max, which it calls its largest and most capable AI model to date. The company claims benchmark performance rivaling frontier systems from Anthropic and OpenAI, as well as Chinese rivals such as Moonshot AI's Kimi K3. At the preview last month, Alibaba said the model was second only to Anthropic's flagship Fable 5. Because the weights are openly available, the release adds further pressure on Silicon Valley and Washington.

An open frontier class model is a real opportunity: teams building AI products get top tier performance without API lockin and without Californian pricing power. The catch is verifiability, because the benchmark numbers come from Alibaba itself and independent evaluations are still missing.
We see tailwind for teams running their own infrastructure, while regulated industries should carefully clarify where these weights come from.
